Every Veterans Day, PBS North Carolina honors and celebrates the  courage, sacrifice and dedication of our nation’s veterans. Through powerful performances, personal stories, independent films and more, we share remarkable journeys of resilience and service on PBS NC and the PBS app

Breaking Enigma: A World War II Game Changer

Narrated by Keith Morrison of "Dateline," this documentary reveals how the breaking of Germany's top-secret Enigma Code at Bletchley Park in the United Kingdom was one of World War II's biggest secrets, alongside the atomic bombs. Some historians estimate that deciphering the German military code shortened the war by two years and possibly saved 14 million lives.

Their commitment and expertise enrich our mission and the lives of those we touch. 

The Wall That Heals 

Hear the stories of seven North Carolinians who served in the Vietnam War. 1,612 people from the state died in the conflict, including the youngest U.S. serviceman to die in the war and one of the eight women. Thousands of Vietnam veterans with post-trauma stress or other disabilities find relief at “The Wall That Heals,” a traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Home, With Honor 

This documentary explores one North Carolina's community's efforts to honor its Vietnam War veterans. The town of Garner invited “The Wall That Heals” to remember those who died in Vietnam, to honor those who went to Vietnam, and to educate people about the sacrifices made by our Vietnam War veterans.

Wilmington, Our First WWII Heritage City 

Wilmington, North Carolina, proudly holds the title of the first WWII Heritage City in the U.S. During and after World War II, many cities around the world were profoundly affected by the war, and some have preserved or commemorated their wartime history as part of their cultural heritage. Wilmington's restored USO facility and historical sites, like Fort Fisher and the Battleship North Carolina, offer visitors a chance to delve into the rich history of World War II. The city's commitment to preserving this heritage is a tribute to the sacrifices made during the war and provides a unique opportunity to honor and learn from this pivotal period in American history.
