Dolly Parton Helps Boost Literacy at Home

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library offers children a free, developmentally appropriate book once a month from the time they are born until their fifth birthday. The program encourages reading as well as interaction between parents/caregivers and children, ultimately helping little ones enter kindergarten with established pre-literacy skills critical to later reading success.

Rockingham County began working with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program in 2012 and has been fortunate to enroll 3,382 children into the program since that time. This literacy program has impacted and supported family engagement with by encouraging reading in the home environment.

Families from diverse backgrounds have benefited greatly from the program by helping children develop a love for reading. We encourage parents and caregivers to register their children for this great literacy program. Imagine the excitement on your child’s face when they receive a new book in the mail every month.
